So firstly apologies for taking so long to post this blog, but I have had a hectic week, what with driving all over the countryside, visiting Beares stores, many interviews with police officials, social workers, prosecutors, to name a few and not to mention hooking up with Round Tablers in almost every town and city Buddy and Me’ visits where I am hosted accommodation in the event of there not being a Protea Hotel, ‘as well as booking in and out of Protea Hotels, although I must admit this function has been an absolute pleasure because whenever I arrive at the front desk of a Protea Hotel and when I leave I am treated like visiting Royalty, but it has been generally a pretty busy week for ‘Buddy and Me’.

So the week started with a visit to firstly the Beares store in Welkom and fortunately having been home hosted by Round Tabler Etienne Van Dyke who only stays a stones throw away from the Beares store in Welkom, my drive for the start of my day was a very short one, about one and a half kilometres.

After a great time with the Beares staff, where I also got to meet up with the charismatic Regional Manager for the Free State region Henk Van Niekerk

That’s Henk standing at the back more interested in the car that was going to run me over because I was standing in the middle of the road taking this picture, I paid a visit to the Lubners staff situated right next door to the Beares store.

After a chat with two members from the SAPS – FCS unit who unfortunately couldn’t add much more to the piles of information I have on the child rape situation in the area, but did confirm that it is happening at an ever increasing rate and agreed that if we could get the government to listen commit to stopping the rape of children by implementing the systems identified and described in my proposal for a solution to child rape (Link on the front page of this website) at least 80 – 85% of child rape could be eradicated from or society, I paid a visit to the Thuthuzela Care Centre which is ‘based’ – that’s as much as I can say about it – at the Kopane Hospital.

These two ladies, Sister Teddy (on the right) and Sister Sarah are very dedicated Forensic Nurses who are doing a sterling job in providing whatever support they can to victims of child rape and sexual abuse as well as victims of domestic violence, when considering the totally inadequate infrastructure they have been given to work with.

I was told that the Thuthuzela Care Centre, since opening in September 2009 (previously it was the Rape Crisis Centre since 2003) handles on average 85 new rape cases per month, and this includes rape of all ages. 35% (30) of these cases involve the rape of children under the age of 14 years-of-age. I’m sure I don’t need to go into details regarding the fact that as usual I was bitterly disappointed to discover that this centre is exactly the same as all the others I have visited and is, due to the fact that it is not functioning in the manner described in the Thuthuzela Care Centre brochures and information provided on the website, a total waist of money and time because mothers reporting the rape of their children still have to follow the shocking and humiliating route needed to report the rape of their children. This was confirmed by the fact that 90% of the cases handled by the Thuthuzela Care Centre are initially reported to the police stations and the victim and mother are transported to the Thuthuzela Care Centre by the police, this I believe defeats the whole object of a ‘one-stop’ support centre. I was told that they cannot encourage mothers through campaigns to report the rape of their children directly to the Thuthuzela Care Centres “because it takes too long for the police to arrive at the centre to obtain the statement etc”.

Doctors used by the Thuthuzela Care Centre at this specific centre come from the private sector, and these doctors are on call and so because the examinations (J88 forensic examinations) cut into their large turn-over business, it takes ages for a doctor to arrive to undertake the essential examination, once again defeating the object of a ‘one-stop’ centre.

After presenting my proposal for a solution, both ladies agreed that the ideal situation would be to have the Thuthuzela Care Centre’s managed and run by an independent NGO with the in-put of the stakeholders, these being the NPA, Police, Social Development and the Department of Health by providing the staff and premises, and of course in order to ensure the centre’s success, it is vital that Government and the relative stakeholders give their total commitment to the development and establishment of the Thuthuzela Care Centres, unfortunately at present there is no commitment what-so-ever from any of these stakeholders and especially government.

Another interesting conversation was with 4 social workers from the offices of ‘Life Line’ and here all four of the individuals interviewed complained about the fact that they spend a huge amount of their time undertaking campaigns in the townships, encouraging the communities to come forward and air their opinions on how to combat the various anti-social behaviours taking place in their communities which includes, child rape and sexual abuse, domestic violence and general crimes and violence caused by the abuse of alcohol and drugs. After encouraging the communities, through campaigns on which large amounts of money are spent, and obtaining the communities in-put and participation, nothing ever happens after reports are submitted. This obviously creates major problems for these social workers who because nothing ever happens they loose face with the communities.

So after a lot of information gathering in Welkom I eventually headed out of the city and took he road to Bloemfontein and after an enjoyable, but cold drive, arrived at my lovely accommodation for the next two nights,

the absolutely incredibly lovely Protea Willow Lake Hotel Bloemfontein. Where in the world could you expect to, on opening the curtains in your hotel room window, be faced with the amazing sight of an elephant standing a few metre s from your window!

 Absolutely incredible! So meet Elley.

After a magic nights sleep the next day involved meeting the staff of the Beares store in the centre of the city

and after a chat with them I headed into the near by township where I visited the staff of the Beares store in Heidedal

While I was in the Mall in Heidedal I got the opportunity to chat to a large number of community members of the township area, and as usual, because I never get used to the information I am given, I was devastated to hear how bad the rape and sexual abuse of children is in the area, and the saddest part is that the communities have lost total faith in the governments ability, in the form of the police, to do what is necessary to stop the rape of the children. Almost everyone I spoke to believes that it is a total waste of time reporting the rape and sexual abuse of children because of the ‘System’.

My second morning I decided to once again indulge in one of the most delicious omelettes I have ever experienced in my life, and so meet the ‘King’ of omelette makers.

As usual I was given a Royal send off by the management and staff of the Protea Willow Lake Hotel.

Unfortunately the General Manager of the Hotel, Blanché Walzl was away on business and so I did not get an opportuntity to thank her for her fantastic generosity and kindness by providing me with the amazing accommodation, but Lindy-Hope- Meiring the ‘Rooms Division Manager (with her hand to hers eyes in the picture) and sister of a long time friend who has helped me with accommodation at the Bloemfontein Protea Hotel on every visit to the city, did a sterling job in ensuring that my stay at this lovely Hotel was a truly fantastic experience. So thanks guys I really had an amazing stay.

Before leaving Bloemfontein I made another visit to a Thuthuzela Care Centre, this time it was to the one ‘established’ in the ‘National Hospital a short way out of the centre of the city. In this instance I was at least happy to find that the premises are probably the best I have seen of any Thuthuzela Centre I have seen to date. But alas, in-spite of the fact that I was told that the response time from the police, on being summonsed to investigate the rape of a child etc, is very good, it was confirmed that in-spite of the fact that the centre was established some 6 years ago, the first point of entry into the system is still the police stations, which once again defeats the object of a ‘one-stop’ support centre. This phrase is used in all the Thuthuzela Care Centre marketing brochures, I strongly suggest that the ‘powers that be’ in the NPA and Thuthuzela centres take the time to look up the meaning and interpretation of the words ‘One- Stop centre’.

My next port of visit was to that lovely old mining town of Kimberley. I don’t know what it is about this town/city but I have always loved visiting it, maybe because it absolutely reeks in history and I love history. So on arrival at the lovely Protea Kimberley Hotel

and after once again being greeted like visiting Royalty, I got settled in my very comfortable room 212 from which I had a spectacular view of the ‘big hole’ and the city of Kimberley directly opposite it.

So here is a picture of the ‘big hole’ damn that water is deep and cold, or so I am told, and I will rather take ‘their’ word for it than find out for myself .

After a visit with the friendly Beares staff in Kimberly

I headed out for the usual Thuthuzela care Centre visit, and here I got into one of the most heated discussions I have ever had with any Thuthuzela centre staff member to date. Initially I thought she was against what I am doing and I initially thought she was not in support of my proposed solution, but after eventually deciphering her ranting and ravings I was pleasantly surprised to discover that she actually agreed with everything I had said!!!

The centre averages about 40 new rape cases a month, with 75% of these being cases involving children under the age of 18 years of age, 30 % of those involve children under the age of 12 years of age. I was told that the response time to a call out by the centre by the SAPS – FCS unit is exceptional good, however more than 90% of the cases are initially reported to the police stations. The ‘ranting and raving’ lady’s biggest gripe is the fact that the government and the ‘stakeholders’ are not committed to the establishment of the Thuthuzela Care Centres and that “if they continue in the manner they are presently going about ‘setting-up’ the centres it is going to be a total waist of money”.

This is a very dedicated Forensic Nurse with the Thuthuzela Care Centre. The Forensic Nurses I am told are fully trained to undertake and complete the J88 forensic examination reports in rape cases.

The evening was spent in the company of a couple of the Round Tablers of Kimberly, Riaan Van Rooyan and Brian (damn I didn’t get his surname mmm slack Mr. Heath) as well as an old (not so much of the old) friend Jason Horseman who used to be with Beares in Kimberley but is now doing extremely well in the music industry with his band called ‘GAGE’ at what is reputed to be the oldest pub in South Africa, The Star of the West

I am told that the wood which the bar counter is made from, was salvaged from the ship after it was wrecked on the Cape Coast in the 1850’s and was transported by ox-wagon all the way to Kimberley.

So now meet, from the left: Brian and Riaan (Round Table Kimberley) Jason (of GAGE fame, make sure you get a copy of their latest CD its brilliant) and of course that ‘other guy’ that was there.

So that is all that happened during the past week in the lives of ‘Buddy and Me- Searching for a Solution to Stopping the Rape and Sexual Abuse of Children’ All that is left for me to say and show you, is that the General manager of the Protea Hotel Kimberley, Jaco Kruger and his incredibly friendly staff out-did themselves in giving me a rite-Royal send off from their lovely hotel

(That’s Jaco standing at the back next to me) So to Jaco and all the staff of the Protea Kimberley Hotel, you have my heartfelt thanks for your incredible friendship and hospitality.

So all that’s left for me to say, is a mighty big thanks to BlackBerry for providing me with this incredible piece of equipment in the form of an amazing cell phone. I have always professed that “all I need is a phone that I can receive and make calls with and can take a message and send and receive sms’s”, but since receiving this amazing device I have had to eat humble pie, because this device has, and I honestly mean it, this is not a sponsored / paid for statement, it has literally turned my life around with this project. So thanks Robyn Milham of BlackBerry for making it possible.

With that I will bid you all farewell and pray that you will keep well and stay safe, and of course do everything in your power to ensure that all children are safe.

So welcome to ‘Buddy and Me’ blog 40. This week ‘Buddy and Me’ (Buddy of course being my esteemed mechanical stead – Beach Buggy) spent what must be the coldest full week we have ever experienced on all three projects of this crusade to find and implement a solution to stopping the rape and sexual abuse of children. We have experienced some pretty freezing conditions over the past 6 years on our crusade across Africa and having visited almost every town and city n South Africa, but the cold has, in the past only lasted one or two days, but this passed week the freezing conditions have not relented and in fact have gotten worse each day as we have headed south, and from what the weather forecasters say, our visit to Bloemfontein on Monday (4th July) is going to be a humdinger!

But enough moaning about the weather, there are people, very young ones, who are suffering much worse because of the atrocities being perpetrated against them by savages roaming our country every day, so without further ado let me begin with where ‘Buddy and Me’ have travelled over this past week and share some of the enlightening information, comments and opinions I have been provided with in the course of my travels.

My week started with a visit to Parys where, thanks to the manager and staff of the Beares store in Parys, I got to meet some really interesting people, amongst others a lady by the name of Gerda Meyer who is with the NGO Free State Care in Action. Gerda confirmed my belief that the judicial system is letting the people down and that there are many individuals who, because they are doing the right thing and reporting the abuse of children, are being made into ‘the baddy’s’.

She confirmed that she has experienced many instances where, teachers, neighbours, community members and social workers have reported the abuse of children, the police have done their job and on appearing in court the accused is asked if he or she is sorry for what they did and on answering “yes” has been let off with a warning only to be charged again later when the same thing occurs again. She told me of a specific case in which a 14 year girl was severely beaten by her step-father for the second time but this time he threw her through a plate glass window and she sustained additional injuries.

On appearing in court he was asked if he was sorry for what he had done and on replying “yes” the child was asked if she forgave him for what he did, now I ask you with tears running down my legs, what do you think a 14 little girl, whose mother depends on his income to ensure the families survival is going to say?? Hence he was released, once again, on a warning. So do our courts expect the savage to beat her to death before any action is taken against him??

The same applies to people reporting the rape and sexual abuse of children in compliance with legislation, because section 54 of the Sexual Offences Act 34/2007 which CORRECTLY AND RIGHTLY states that; Any person who is made aware of the fact that a child has been raped or sexually abused, fails to report it to the authorities (police) is guilty of an offence” are being branded baddies for having reported the rape of children when the case is thrown out of court because of the failure of the NPA (National Prosecuting Authority) to provide ‘Children’s Courts’ which are properly established child friendly courts.

I have written extensively about the establishment of Thuthuzela Care Centres which I firmly believe that in-spite of the fact that they are the roots to the solution to eradicating the rape and sexual abuse of children from our society, are currently, as they are being set up by the NPA, a total waist of time and money.

I believe that the NPA should focus on what they are supposed to know best, the judicial system, and stay out of something they know nothing about, such as the establishment of Thuthuzela Care Centres, after all the ‘Head’ of the Thuthuzela Care Centre initiative is an Advocate as is the other Regional heads, in other words legal ‘experts’ not Social Workers, and an NGO should be created to undertake the establishment and running of these centres. The NPA should focus their time ensuring that Children’s Courts are established at all Regional courts and that these are made child friendly and ensure that everything is done to increase the existing pathetic national average conviction rate for child rape from its present miserable 4 – 6% to an acceptable level of at least 85%.

I further believe that they, the NPA, should be focusing on ensuring that the system is changed, on a national basis, to allow a case of child rape (cases involving children under the age of 12 years of age) to go to trial immediately when the investigation is completed, according to my information this, in most cases, is within a period of 6 – 12 weeks (maximum 3 months) and that these cases be given priority over all other cases on the court list. Following the completion of the trial, the verdict (and hopefully sentencing) will stand down pending the results of the DNA forensic test. I further believe that it would improve our national conviction rate if in all instances samples of the accused blood is taken at the time of his arrest and submitted together with DNA samples for testing.

The other interesting discussion I had with Gerda was surrounding the fact that the biggest problem our country is facing is the fact that major serious crime being perpetrated by children is increasing at a phenomenal rate, and this includes the rape of children by children. She agreed with me that the current ‘Diversion Programme’ is not working and that because of the campaigns to inform children of their rights, which are very good and we both agreed are essential, many children are abusing the system and that the campaigns should include the fact that the kids must respect the rights of other kids and members of the communities. They also need to be made aware of the fact that should they abuse these rights that there will be consequences, but unfortunately due to the implementation of the ‘Child Justice Act’ which states that a child under the age of 10 cannot be held responsible for his/her actions there are no consequences.

So now on with my visit to the lovely town of Parys situated on the banks of the Vaal River where the Beares Store Manager Daleen Smit unfortunately was on leave but her stand-in manager Marietjie Cordier did a sterling job in arranging people for me to meet, apart from Gerda, and this included meeting DJ/Presenter Mawandile Sontyale of Lentswe Fm93-0 radio station which is situated in the near-by township.

My interview proved to be a hit with the community and I had some tremendous feed back, and was stopped twice on my way out of the township by members of the community who had heard me on the radio and wanted to say “hi” and chat to me, a really awesome experience.

Then it was time to say farewell to the staff of Beares in Parys

and head out of Parys for the distant Potchefstroom where I was hosted accommodation by Round Tabler Johan Van der Walt and his wife Makie and their lovely daughter Johané.-

As usual, the Round Tablers ensured that I was kept busy in the evening with a social get-together with the Tablers of Potchefstroom and their wives

and I must give a special thanks to Round Tabler Louis Janneke and his lovely wife Nadine, who unfortunately when I visited the Carletonville area was recuperating from surgery and so I did not get to see her, but the two travelled all the way from Carletonville to join me and the festivities in Potchefstroom.

So to Nadine and Louis (on the right) many thanks for driving all that way in the cold, it is sincerely appreciated.

Obviously I am not allowed to leave a Round Table area without being presented with the Round Table banner and lapel pin,

so here I am being pinned and presented with the banner of Round Table Potchefstroom by my host Tabler Johan Van der Walt.

The next morning (Tuesday 28th) I visited the Beares store in Potchefstroom and spent some quality time with the manager of the store, Alida van der Merwe and her friendly staff

and here I was provided with some devastating information by one of the sales people in the store, Allan Piercey, the happy looking chappy in the front of the picture. He told me of the incredibly shocking story of how in 2001 his 16 year-old sister was abducted and has never been seen since. Then one year later his 15 year-old sister was abducted and her body was found two weeks later and it was discovered that she had been raped and brutally murdered. Now 10 years later still no arrests have been made and his 16 year-old sister is still missing; I am lost for words to describe how I felt when he related this story to me. I hope to meet with his mom in Rustenburg when I visit the area and she will provide me with more details on the cases so stay tuned to this website for an up date on this horrific story.

I was told that a Thuthuzela Care Centre had been established at the Provincial Hospital in Potchefstroom about 6-8 months ago and so after bidding the Beares staff farewell I headed for the hospital. Unfortunately, as per usual, on entering the hospital premises and enquiring as to the whereabouts of the Thuthuzela Care Centre with the security, all I received was blank looks and the reply “No, this is the hospital, you must have the wrong place”. On entering the hospital and after spending half an hour walking around making enquiries with nurses and even Matrons (I presume they were Matrons’ because they had dark blue type colour uniforms with lots of flashes on their shoulders – very important looking) I was still no closer to locating the whereabouts of the Thuthuzela Care Centre offices, in-fact nobody had even heard of the Thuthuzela Care Centre!!, and so once again very disappointed in the Thuthuzela Care Centre initiative (although a great concept) I made my departure from Potchefstroom and headed in the direction of Klerksdorp.

My accommodation in Klerksdorp was courtesy of the Protea Hotel Klerksdorp and when I arrived at the front desk, the amazing lady, Elrica (damn I never even got her surname) who had done so much to arrange my accommodation, (taking into account the fact that a reservation had been made, cancelled because of my moms sad death and then rearranged) greeted me like visiting royalty and immediately summonsed the General Manager Bertus Kotzee who did likewise.

Bertus is the cool looking guy with the stripped shirt and Elrica is the stunning lady with the white boots. What an amazing bunch of people at this lovely hotel

Thanks guys your friendship and incredible hospitality is sincerely appreciated.

After a fantastic nights rest, Wednesday morning found me heading for the Klerksdorp Beares store where I was kept busy for most of the day interviewing and chatting to various people who are involved in some way or another in the fight against child rape.

One of the interesting people I spoke to was an officer from the SAPS – FCS unit who confirmed that the rape and sexual abuse of children in the area is happening at a horrendous rate. He also confirmed that the FCS unit covers a very large area and in fact until recently the area was almost double in size with the cluster consisting of 12 outer-lying stations and the furthest police station in their cluster being almost 200 kilometres away. The total FCS staff available to provide services to child rape and domestic violence victims total 14 members. Again I would like to know how many traffic cops are employed in this vast area??

He also confirmed that he believes that the system itself is guilty of abuse and that something drastic has to be done fast in order to stop the scourge of child rape which is increasing at a phenomenal rate across the country. He firmly believes that by implementing the system I mentioned earlier in this blog, regarding cases of child rape going to court once the investigation is complete etc, will make a major difference and undoubtedly have a dramatic effect on increasing the conviction rate in child rape cases.

Based on his experience, he aggress fully that the initial statements, at the time of reporting, as well as the inexperience of the police officials with regard to evidence gathering at the initial point of report, are the major contributing factors to the ridiculously low national conviction rate of 4 – 6%, and therefore fully agrees and supports my proposal for a solution to stopping the rape of children as per the link on the front page of this website.

I met with a number of other people who were instrumental in contributing opinions and comments on the subject of child rape, one in particular was Salomé Mogotsi of ‘Life Line’ who is currently busy studying my proposal and has promised to come back to me with her opinions and comments, but initially also supports the solution based on what I told them, so Salomé I look forward to your constructive criticism.

I was taken by the FCS member to the Tshepong Hospital in the township area of Matlosana to visit the KOSH (Klerksdorp – Orkney – Stilfontein – Hartebeesfontein) Rape Crisis Centre as well as the Thuthuzela Care Centre which is supposed to have been established there 8 months ago. Unfortunately as in all other visits to Thuthuzela Care Centres I was sadly disappointed, once again! The centre is a mere shell; in-fact in this case there isn’t even a shell, and even after 8 months there are two ladies employed there who are basically doing nothing, a total waist of time and money, in-spite of the fact that they are highly motivated and rearing to go, they have nothing to work with. After my chat with the ladies they all wanted to know why I had not been asked to talk at the up-coming ‘Indaba’ on the Thuthuzela Care Centres to be held next month, and that they will make sure the ‘powers that be’ get to hear about me and my proposal because they believe it is the solution. So thanks for your vote of confidence ladies and I look forward to receiving some response from your superiors because to-date I have had no responses from my emails or telephonic messages to the three heads of the Thuthuzela Care Centres or NPA.

After bidding farewell to Lynette Geldenhuys, the Beares store Manager and her friendly staff in Klerksdorp

I headed back to my Protea Hotel lovely accommodation and prepared for another evening with the Round Tablers this time those of Klerksdorp.

So after a great evening with the guys I was once again pinned and presented with the Round Table of Klerksdorp’s pin and banner, man my collection is growing at leaps and bounds.

Before leaving the next morning I popped into Round Tabler Jaco Minie’s office to say hi to his lovely wife Lisindra because they had kindly hosted me accommodation on my last project visit to Klerksdorp and to collect yet another Round Table banner and pin from the Round Table guys of the Maltosane Table. Now Jaco has this incredibly amazing car, an Audi V10

and he wanted to swop me his car for Buddy, unfortunately I had to decline the offer because Buddy and I have been through so much together that I did not have the heart to part with him (can you believe that? Mmmmm I don’t think soJ)

On my way to Kroonstad later that day (Thursday 30th June) and when I was about 15 kilometres out of Kroonstad, a stone, more like a rock, was thrown up from the wheel of an oncoming car and hit Buddy’s windscreen directly in-front of my face.

It sounded like I had been shot at and so ducked and hit brakes, but fortunately the rock had not penetrated all the way through, but had splattered glass from the inside into my face, but no damage done, now just an extra expense and so “does anyone know a windscreen replacement business that will kindly sponsor me a new windscreen?!”.

My visit to the Beares store in Kroonstad was an interesting one,

in the sense that the country was experiencing a major problem with all the cell phone networks down. I had my cell phone services suspended because “I had not registered with RICA” in-spite of the fact that I had done this three months earlier and had confirmed it on the sms number provided by the cell phone company, “sorry we made a mistake’ but fortunately their service was good and I was reconnected immediately, and this was about 8 hours before the ‘big cut-off’ was due to happen.

My accommodation in Kroonstad was hosted for the evening by Round Tabler Ferdi Klopper and his wife Collette on their lovely farm which is situated about 30 kilometres Jo’burg side of Klerksdorp. The trip to the farm involved a drive of about 7 kilometres along a gravel road and this time it was undoubtedly better than the last time I had had to travel the road on project 2 in January 2010 when after some really heavy rains the gravel road had pools of water up to a metre deep and mud like you won’t believe.

Buddy’s and my lovely accommodation at the Klopper farm, mine fortunately being inside.

So now meet Ferdi and Collette Klopper. And then, yep you guessed, I was pinned once again and presented with the Kroonstad Round Table banner

The next morning (Friday 1st July) after bidding farewell to the Klopper family and thanking them for their kind friendship and hospitality, I headed out in freezing conditions to first Odendaalsrus where I spent some quality time with the Beares staff

and after a chat with some people which included the police who could not provide me with anything new, but confirmed child rape is happening on a massive scale and getting worse by the day, I headed for Wesselsbron where I met the Beares staff there.

There wasn’t much to learn here either and all the information was pretty repetitive stuff, so I headed out of Wesselsbron in still freezing conditions and made my way to Welkom where I was kindly hosted accommodation by Round Tabler Etienne Van Wyk.

Etienne has a lovely granny flat attached to his house so I was able to spend the weekend catching up on work on Buddy which involved finishing the fibre glassing and painting of the storage box lid Cameron had so kindly made for me in Sasolburg last weekend, getting my washing done, attending a Round Table function and ‘progressive’ dinner – Pic to be supplied by Round Table - which involved travelling to various Tablers houses for each part of the dinner, very interesting concept, and of course me being pinned and presented with the Welkom Round Table pin and banner by the Table Chairman Gert Loots.

So that about brings me to the end of this blog, and I am sure Julia in Jo’burg is once again saying “and thank goodness for that”, and once again Julia you have my sincere apologies for such a long blog and so many photos, but I honestly did not get a chance to do a blog during the week, in-fact I hardly got any sleep this past week, but hopefully I will get one done on Wednesday in Bloemfontein or Kimberly and so can do a shorter blog with not so many photos. (Julia of CP’s Pub in Lambton Germiston kindly converts my blogs from email form into whatever form is needed to post them onto my website and because of the length of my blogs spends many sleepless hours doing it J many thanks Julia).

So with that I will bid you ciao for now, keep well, stay safe and above all keep all children safe.

Caring regards from

This blog is dedicated to the story of Cathy Kenny, mother of 3 year old ‘Lamb’ who was raped by her mothers boyfriend, one of the many savages running free around South Africa raping and sexually abusing children at will, with the small victims and their mothers being forced to live with the shockingly inadequate system we as South Africans are forced to live with, a system which in it’s self is guilty of the abuse of children. For obvious reasons her daughters name is changed to ‘Lamb’ and the ‘other individuals’ name has been changed to (the savage).

INSAKE:        VERKRAGTING VAN MINDERJARIGE

Gedurende Maart 2011, was my 3-jarige dogtertjie ‘Lamb’  verkrag deur (the savage) (my ma se kêrel, in my huis.  Ek het haar in my ma se sorg gelaat omdat ek en my man vir sy ma kruideniersware moes neem in Pretoria.

Hy is by my huis gearresteer.

Ek glo my kind.

Sou u enige verdure inligting benodig, kontak my gerus.

I hear the silence, I taste the tears the echoes of guilt will haunt my years the empty nothing I know the pain as it fills my soul I feel the shame

She see her clothes fall to the floor his breath on her face as he locks the door she feels his touch upon her naked skin trying to push him away but he enters in

She see’s the world through different eyes as he lay there a part of her dies and she feels his touch upon herself again though she asked him to stop he takes her again

She hears him shower in the next room happily singing his favorite tune while she lay’s on her bed in a tattered mess her innocence lost

She see’s him smile and gives her a kiss as he says he remembers it was good as this

She sees his clothes with hers on the floor as she feels his touch on her once more

I taste the tears of her shattered pain as he raped her over and over again she hears him profess his love for her as she cringe at the feel of him touching her

She feels him lay there by her side his hand on hers and her pain inside the tears I cry to

Reflect her shame as I realize things will not be the same

I tell a friend I see him stare his disbelief cannot compare to the violation of her trust

The night that monster raped my child

I heard the truth twisted into lies my secret shame before the eyes of all who was

Her supposed family their compassion was but only pretends

My baby will not ever be the same as I see him walk beyond her pain he was not punished they let him go the shame he gave her he gloats for he knows.

VIR WIE DIT MAG AANGAAN

Ek Gesina Cathrina Kenney I.D no XXXXXXXX woonagtig te  XXXXXX  Tel no XXXXX email XXXXX is die biologiesie moeder van ‘Lamb’ gebore 10 Februarie 2008

En my kind het weer ja gese my kind was toe gevra wie is die oom?

Gee it’s great to be ♫On the road again♫ and in-spite of the freezing cold mornings the weather has been very good to ‘Buddy and Me’ with conditions warming up nicely once the sun has had an opportunity to shine, it’s incredible what sunshine can do to get me motivated.

Monday morning found ‘Buddy and Me’ heading out of the Dos Santos’s garden cottage in the direction of Westonaria where I got to spend some time chatting to two very dedicated police ladies, members of the Westonaria SAPS – FCS unit in the form of Florence Molapo and Lucia Montwedi. These two ladies provided me with some astonishing facts concerning the rape, prostitution and general child abuse going on in the townships and informal settlements which are included in the area covered by the Westonaria SAPS – FCS unit.

But first I must tell you that the area is a mighty large one which includes 5 satellite police stations which are serviced by the Westonaria SAPS – FCS unit with 9 townships and informal settlements which house on average around 7 000 people each and this entire vast area is serviced by three FCS members. I would love to know how many traffic cops are employed in this massive area???

I was told that at least 40% of the house holds in the townships and informal settlement areas are headed by children in the 14 – 17 year-old age group who have on average 3 – 5 siblings to raise. Obviously because of the children’s act which forbids child labour, and rightly so, the ‘heads’ of these families use ‘other mean’ of obtaining / ‘earning’ money to feed and clothe themselves and their siblings. Unfortunately the ‘other means’ includes the prostitution of both themselves as well as their siblings who are as young as 4 and 5 years of age.

The thing that I find amazing is the fact that the police and other government institutions, such as the Department of Social Development are fully aware of these practices, but turn a blind eye because “the kids have to survive some how”. (This was not a quotation from the two lady police officials I interviewed, in-fact they are horrified at what is going on in the area, and are desperately seeking a solution to the problem, but was quoted by another staff member of another government department, who in-fact is a social worker!). Other forms of generating income in these child headed homes include the operating of ‘Shabeens’ – illegal pubs/bottle stores and so the abuse of alcohol and drugs is rife, which obviously adds to the problem of the rape and sexual abuse of the children.

As one individual I spoke to, who happens to be employed in a government institution and who is also a social worker, pointed out, “if the kids found proper jobs, be it on local farms or wherever, to generate income, the individuals employing them would be hammered very quickly by the authorities for contravening the Children’s Act”. So according to the authorities it appears, it is better that they participate in the destruction of their siblings lives by prostituting them and allowing them to be abused by drunken savages who rape and sexually abuse them and the small kids rather than work!!

So to Hantie Wagener, the stand in manager of the Beares store in Westonaria, many thanks for arranging the meeting with my guests, which included members of the police as well as social workers in the area

So meet the staff of Beares Westonaria.

From Westonaria ‘Buddy and Me’ drove the short distance, over the hill, to the other magic little mining town of Fochville. Here I had, apart from others, an intense discussion with an intriguing lady by the name of Annelie van Rooyan who is a social worker employed with the ‘Fochville Social Services’ – an initiative of the ‘Dutch reformed Church’ and Annelie I don’t care what you say about the fact that the word ‘Social Worker’ is used too freely and that the far majority of people using that title do not deserve to use it, because you most certainly do. Annelie confirmed that the abuse of both women and children in the area is extremely bad, and that there is no support structure for abused women and children at all in the area.

She agreed with me that the ‘system’ is letting victims down and that the system it’s self in the form of the government is in-fact guilty of child abuse. She told me of one specific case in which a mother was charged for the severe beating and assault of a very small child, her second offence, and on appearing in court the magistrate asked her if she was “sorry for what she had done” on saying “yes” the case was dismissed and she was given a warning!! Annelie confirmed that social workers and teachers etc are fed up with becoming the ‘baddies’ by reporting child abuse (In accordance with section 54 of Act32/2007 of the Sexual Offences Act) in situations where kids are being severely beaten and abused and the savages perpetrating these abuses are walking away from court without so much as a smack on the wrist.

According to Annalie, the far majority of South Africans, and I agree with her whole heartedly, do not have a clue of what is going on with regard to the rape and sexual abuse of children in South Africa, and generally don’t want to know and in the majority of instances hide their heads in the sand like Ostriches – until it happens to their child and then they scream blue murder and claim that “nobody is doing anything”.

The Beares staff in Fochville really did a sterling job in making my visit to the area a really interesting one, so to the Beares store manager Trudie Shaw and her staff, thank you for going to all the effort to make my visit to Fochville such a good one.

So meet the friendly staff of Beares Fochville (that’s Trudie with the red hair – a fiery ladyJ)

Tuesday morning I bid farewell to my hosts for the weekend,

Hanntjie and Cisco Dos Santos, and headed for the sparkling clean town of Meyerton. Here thanks to the lovely and friendly Beares Manager Karen Landers who did an outstanding job in arranging for a large group of guests who are all involved in some way or another with providing support to child rape victims, to come to the store to chat to me .

Amongst the guests were a few staff members of the Thuthuzela Care Centre which has been established (well sort of) at the Kopanong Hospital in Vereeniging. It was also the first time that any Thuthuzela Care Centre had attended a meeting at a Beares store and had their large banner flying high outside the Beares store and were chatting to passer-bys and handing out brochures containing information on the centre.

After a lengthy discussion with my guests in which after providing them with the details of my proposed solution to eradicating the rape and sexual abuse of children from our society, they all agreed that I was definitely on the right track, especially with regard to the proper establishment of the Thuthuzela Care Centres as per my link on this website. So to Karen and her friendly staff at Beares Meyerton,

you have my heartfelt thanks for the amazing job you did in arranging for the very interesting group of guests you got to your store to talk to me. Oh yes, that’s Karen with the blond hair in the picture.

I also got to meet and chat to the staff of the Lubners store in Meyerton, so to these friendly people,

thanks for your friendship and support to the ‘Buddy and Me’ project and words of encouragement.

My visit to the Thuthuzela Care Centre later in the afternoon revealed that unfortunately in-spite of the fact that the staff at the centre are amongst the most dedicated Thuthuzela Care Centre personal I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and the marketing of the centres services to the community as well as the close relationship they have with the local SAPS – FCS unit members is outstanding, the centre is still not providing the essential services and support structures they profess to provide in their glossy brochures on site at the centre.

Hence I still maintain and stand by my belief that the Thuthuzela Care Centres, as they are currently being established, is a total waist of time and money, because the services they are providing is basically the same as those which are being provided by thousands of NGO’s and NPO’s all over South Africa, and the service they should be providing should be a ‘one stop’ point of report service and they should be leaving the post rape services as in on going counselling etc to the NGO’s.

My accommodation for the next three nights, being Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, was arranged by the Round Tablers of Van der Bijl Park at the magnificent Emerald Casino and Hotel, so following the completion of my meetings and information gathering I made haste to the luxury of my latest ‘home’ / accommodation.

My next visit was to the township area of Evaton and after meeting and chatting to the Evaton Beares staff

I headed to Vereeniging via the centre of the township. Obviously, as always happens, I was forced to make a few stops and chat to members of the community who were only too happy to chat to me and provide me with their comments and opinions on what needs to be done to eradicate the disgusting crime of child rape from their communities and society in general, and I could not help but wish that our government would take the time to talk to the members of these communities and hear how they believe the death penalty should be implemented for savages raping children.

My visits to the Vereeniging and Vander Bijl Park areas produced probably what must be some of the most fascinating discussions I have had with police officials I have had in a long time. The meetings with these interesting members of the police FCS unit were arranged by the Beares store Managers in the respective towns,

Beares Vereeniging and

Beares Vander Bijl Park. The talks included a few other guests as well who all contributed to making the discussions really interesting ones.

The most interesting aspect of the discussion was surrounding the statistics which the police are required to submit to head quarters which are forwarded to parliament via the minister of police.

The ‘powers that be’ in the police, along with the Minister and other parliamentary members, throw a wobbly, and rightly so, whenever statistics reveal an increase in crime in all areas of South Africa. However what they have failed to identify is the fact that because we are only experiencing a measly 15 – 18% of child rape cases in South Africa being reported, the situation as far as child rape is concerned will have to get much worse, as in the reporting of child rape, before it can get better.

Unfortunately what is currently occurring, is that when a police station commander submits his statistics which reveal an increase in the number of child rape cases occurring in his or her area, the ‘powers that be’ throw a wobbly, when in-fact they should be commending the police in that area because all that has occurred is that the police in that area have done a good job by way of campaigns at schools and in the communities to encourage children and mothers to report child rape.

With this in mind I believe that the statistics concerning the rape and sexual abuse of children should not be read in conjunction with the other statistics of crime and that the police in the areas where child rape reveals an increase in the number of cases reported, these policemen and women should be commended.

I also got to meet and chat to the staff of Lubners in Vereeniging

and this bunch of friendly individuals provided me with some fascinating comments and opinions on what they believe should be done to eradicate child rape from our society.

The other store I visited is the new Beares store in Van der Bijl Park situated in the Bedworth Centre

and here I was given the opportunity to chat to a large group including the Beares staff for over an hour and obtained some more fascinating comments and opinions on what needs to be done to stop child rape and after presenting the details of my proposed solution everyone said “YES THAT”S WHAT HAS TO BE DONE!”

My visit to Sasolburg was a particularly enjoyable one, with a studio interview with Karabo Radio (Kfm) with Radebe Jabulani

I also got to visit another Thuthuzela Care Centre which has been established (sort of) at the Metsimaholo District Hospital, which once again, I am sorry to say, even after having been established 8 months ago, is currently a total waist of time and money. This centre operates with 2 staff members and it is marketed on the basis that victims must first go to the police station and then be transported by police vehicle to the centre where in the hospital there is ONE doctor on duty to handle all casualty cases, it was confirmed that it can take hours to get the doctor to undertake the essential J88 forensic examination. The centre has handled a total of approximately 70 cases since its establishment 8 months ago, with 5% being cases of child rape in which the victims were under the age of 12 years of age. The hospital does not have one single forensic nurse!!!

So thanks to the manager and staff of Beares Sasolburg for arranging such an interesting group of people for me to talk to during my visit to Sasolburg

My evening was spent socialising and talking to the members of Round Table of Van der Bijl Park as well as Sasolburg, Vereeniging and Carletonville.

Me being pinned and presented with the Van der Bijl Park Round Table lapel pin and banner by the Table Chairman Kabous Du Preez.

After the meeting we were joined for a social evening by the Tablers wives, sorry for the poor quality of the photo but it was probably the number of beers I had consumed at that stage that effected the qualityJ

My accommodation for the weekend was hosted in the form of home hosting by the Chairman of Round Table Sasolburg, Thys Human,

Thys is the guy on the left of the picture and believe me it was really appreciated because other wise I would have had to camp somewhere along the banks of the Vaal river, and believe me it is cold here, so many thanks Thys your friendship and hospitality is sincerely appreciated.

Before I sign off I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Cameron Mundy who spent a large portion of Friday night building a new lid for Buddy’s storage box which is situated behind my seat and which totally rotted and broke into pieces.

Man (Cameron Mundy) and dog after a successful job completed.

Well that about sums up the activities of ‘Buddy and Me’ for the passed week, and I am sure Julia who kindly assists me by converting my sms’d blogs to whatever form is needed to post them onto the website is saying, “and thank heavens for that’ so Julia I am sincerely sorry for the extra long blog and especially for the number of photo’s, but it was a long week with a lot happening, but (once againJ) I will make a concerted effort to reduce the number of photos in the future.

So with that I will bid you farewell for now, so until next I get a chance to write, keep well, stay safe and above all KEEP ALL CHILDREN SAFE.

Caring regards from

Hi to all the supporters and readers off the ‘Buddy and Me’ website. Yep just when you thought it was safe to go back out on the streets, ‘Buddy and Me’ pop up again and it’s good to be, as in the words of Johnny Cash, ♫On the road again♫.

I apologise for the delay in submitting an updated blog but with my moms passing away on the 27th May and waiting for her ashes etc and then having to go to Jo’burg to collect my ‘new/renewed – according to the new system’ firearm licence which took three and a half years to process and I was told that I only had 6 weeks to collect it or else it would be cancelled?, I have not been involved in the child rape situation for the passed couple of weeks, but now I’m back with a vengeance.

So this is my family who send their thanks for all the kind emails and Face Book words of sympathy and condolences which were received from so many people, so this picture was taken after all the missing ones had arrived from all parts of the world for a family reunion the night before my mom’s memorial service at ‘The twisted lemon’ in Westville.

Before I get on with the details of the first week ‘back on the project’, I would like to provide everyone with information regarding ‘what this project, project 3’ is all about and what I hope to achieve from it. The reason for this is that I have had many enquiries from people via email asking what I hope to achieve from this project, ‘Buddy and Me – project 3’ so here goes:

The purpose and aims of ‘Buddy and Me – Project 3’

Projects 1 and 2 were exactly what the project name said: “Searching for a Solution to the Rape and Sexual Abuse of Children’. This entailed thousands of talks with members of the SAPS, court officials, NGO’s, Social workers, etc and in particular members of the communities, especially mothers of victims in townships where the far majority of child rape cases occur, to establish: 1) Why mothers are not reporting the rape of their children 2) What needs to be done to encourage mothers to report the rape of their children 3) What needs to be done to stop the rape of children.

After thousands of discussions and almost 130,000 kilometres of travelling, (on projects 1 & 2 – now completed more than 183 000 kilometres), I arrived at what I believe, and has been verified by hundreds of people working with child rape victims all over South Africa, to be the solution to stopping the rape of children in South Africa, or rather one aspect of it. And so ‘Buddy and Me – Project-3’ is focussed on making the public aware of the fact that there is a solution and in-fact it is starring us right in the face, and it is in the form of the establishment of THUTHUZELA CARE CENTRES at all provincial and Regional hospitals around South Africa. Unfortunately after visiting 28 of the existing centres (93 need to be established) I have identified the fact that in all instances the centres are mere shells and are therefore a total waist of money and time as they are currently being established.

Details of how I believe the Thuthuzela Care Centres should be established can be seen as a link on my website www.buddyandme.co.za “A Proposed Solution to Stopping the Rape of Children”. UNICEF and USAID are the two main contributing donors to the initiative and I would desperately like to meet and chat to someone in a senior position in these organisations regarding the establishment of the Thuthuzela Care Centres, so if anyone reading this blog knows of such a person please email contact details to me via: steve@buddyandme.co.za .

‘Buddy and Me – Project 3’ is therefore focused on an awareness campaign to ensure that government establishes the Thuthuzela Care Centres  properly and provides the mothers with the essential support structure to ensure that mothers report the rape of their children and to bring awareness to the fact that section 54 of Act 32 of the Sexual Offences Act is enforced, this being a section of the act which forces any person who is made aware of the fact that a child has been raped, to report the rape or sexual abuse of the child to the authorities. Unfortunately since it’s inception in November 2007, not one single person has ever been charged under this section, in-spite of the fact that we are experiencing an average of 600 child rape cases a day in South Africa with only 15 – 18% of them being reported to the authorities.

This in a nut shell is what ‘Buddy and Me – Project 3’ is all about. Obviously the other function of the project is to get as much money raised for the NGO organisations identified as links on the front page of this website: The Teddy Bear Clinic, Bobbi Bear Foundation and Clinic, TygerBear and GRIP: by clicking on one, or all of their links, and after linking to the respective organisation, making a donation by clicking onto ‘donations’.

There is much more to ‘Buddy and Me’ – project-3’ which also involves an awareness campaign of the failure of the police and NPA to enforce the contents of section 54 mentioned earlier in this blog, which in itself is contributing to the increase in the number of child rape cases occurring in South Africa.

So after having said all of that, now let me get on with what has been happening in the lives of ‘Buddy and Me’ since rescheduling the project following my mom’s memorial service.

Because I had to first travel to Jo’burg from Pinetown to collect my firearm licence, I decided to reverse the cancelled schedule and so my first visit was to the Krugersdorp area where I visited the Beares store and where the store manager Phyllis Knight and her staff started this leg off with a very loud bang!

Lots of kids spending some really quality time with the staff of Beares and Lubners Krugersdorp.

And no visit to Krugersdorp would be complete without the traditional demo march through the streets of Krugersdorp with the kids screaming at the tops of their little lungs “STOP CHILD ABUSE”.

And so here are the amazingly friendly people of Beares Krugersdorp with the ‘Boss Lady’ – Phyllis Knight – on the extreme right of the picture. And of course we can’t leave out the friendly people forming the staff of Lubners Krugersdorp who contributed to the days activities

So meet the Lubners Krugersdorp staff led by Elize de Beer stand –in manager(with the pink blouse).

While in Krugersdorp I had extensive talks with members of the police forces FCS unit who provided me with some astonishing information on what is happening with the rape and sexual abuse of children in the area as well as Ms. Buyi Makhubela who is the head of the local Teddy Bear Clinic in Krugersdorp and all agreed that my stance or project to have the Thuthuzela Care Centres properly established is a brilliant one and they all fully support my project, so thanks guys your support and words of encouragement is sincerely appreciated.

I also got to meet up with the members of Round Table Krugersdorp where I attended their meeting and did a presentation talk and was presented with the Tables lapel pin and banner with their encouraging comments and well wishes writen on the back to add to my ever increasing collection of Round table pins and banners

and thanks guys for providing me with great accommodation at ‘The Palms’ guest house.

The next day involved a visit to, firstly Beares Randfontein where I got to meet the lady who I believe deserves my award for being ‘The character of note” within the Beares/Lubners group, and that is Tracey Mallett, and when one combines this crazy lady J together with the other one, namely Adri Oosthuizen (Manager of the Randfontein Lubners store) in one town, you must know what happens!! J

But seriously, these two ladies put together a day for me which I thoroughly enjoyed and involved, as usual, me talking to a large group of guests and once I start talking, as you should know by now, I never stop! So to Tracey and Adri and your amazing staff, you have mine and buddy’s heartfelt thanks for arranging a magic day.

This is outside the Lubners store.

The 2 crazy ladies J of Beares and Lubners -Tracey with the yellow jacket and Adri on the left of the photo, with Captain Appel of the Krugersdorp SAPS – FCS unit and ‘that other guy’.

And Tracey with the rest of her friendly Beares staff.

So thanks Tracey and Adri and the rest of your great staff for arranging such a magic day for ‘Buddy and Me’ in Randfontein, we look forward to seeing you again, hopefully on the next project?

In Randfontein I was told of a major paedophile case involving another 72 year-old savage who has raped and sexually abused something like 170 odd children, the case is on going and can you believe it, “because of his age he has been released and is under ‘house arrest’, unbelievable. (See details of the other 72 year-old savage’s case in Upington – blog 35) So I will be following both of these cases with great interest and will be provided with up dated information by a friend in Randfontein and Upington.

Thursday being a public holiday found ‘Buddy and Me’ attending the Carletonville Round Table golf day which was held at the ‘Goldfields Country & Golf Club’. This was attended by 128 golfers and as usual I did a lot of talking, my favourite passed time. The day was a fantastic success and a good time was had by all.

Three of the Tablers of Carletonville braaing boerewors for the golfers at the 6th hole, the guy nearest the camera is the Table Chairman Michael Dos Santos who together with his lovely wife Nadia home hosted me for the night, so many thanks for your fantastic friendship and amazing hospitality.

The Tablers and me proudly displaying the Carletonville Round Table banner.

Friday morning found ‘Buddy and Me’ visiting only the Lubners store in Carletonville, the reason being that the Beares store unfortunately burnt down a couple of months ago and so I was devastated to discover that a visit to what has always been one of my favourite Beares stores to visit was not possible, also to add to my woes, the man who has always made my visit to his Beares store such a memorable one, namely Leon Visser the store manager was away on leave, but Leon, Noreen did an outstanding job in arranging a magic day for ‘Buddy and Me’.

So meet the staff of Beares and Lubners in Carletonville. If you look carefully you can see some of the fire damage in the top left corner of the picture above the Beares sign.

Saturday was spent doing the finishing touches to Buddy’s new and improved rear tails lights which my son-in-law Zack helped me fit in Pinetown (Actually he did all the work, I mostly watched and passed the beers). So my work on Saturday involved fibre glassing the edges and painting them.

(Me hard at work sanding the fibre glass, a really lousy job I must tell you) and then the finished product

At least the cars following me can actually see the lights now, they are really bright especially when compared the miserable things which were on previously.

Of course Saturday afternoon, after all the strenuous work, I had to pop into the local ‘joint’ and watch the SHARKS kick the Bulls butts over a couple of cold frosties, an absolute pleasure!

I had intended camping at the near by Boskop Dam for the weekend, but Michael – Chairman of Carletonville Round Table’s – mother and father, Hannetjie and Cisco Dos Santos believed I would probably end up freezing to death and so insisted that I spend the weekend in their incredibly lovely garden cottage, so Hannetjie and Cisco you have my sincere thanks for your friendship and hospitality.

And so ended the first week back on the project for ‘Buddy and Me’ and it has been really wonderful being ♫On the road again♫. I got to meet a number of extremely interesting people in the form of prosecutors, police officials and social workers who provided me with an abundance of information on what is happening with regard to child rape in the area, much of it being repetitive, but was also presented with a lot new and quite mind boggling information.

One person in particular was the Senior Prosecutor in Carletonville, Ms. Elize Smit who confirmed that child rape is occurring at a shocking rate, but believes that because they have adopted a ‘zero tolerance’ attitude they are experiencing a very high rate of convictions, music to my ears. She also provided me with the incredible confirmation that she has charged a mother of a small child under section 54 of the Sexual Offences Act 32/2007 (mentioned earlier in this blog, regarding the requirement of any person who is made aware of the rape of a child to report it) so I will be waiting with baited breath to hear the outcome of the charges, as she is, because she confirmed that she has also not heard of anyone being charged under this section.

I would like to leave you with this quotation which was recently in the ‘London Times’ “South Africa is the only country in the world where affirmative action is in favour of the majority who has complete political control.

The fact that the political majority requires affirmative action to protect them against a 9% minority group is testament to a complete failure on their part to build their own wealth making structures, such that their only solution is to take it from others”. Interesting!!

Don’t forget that the TygerBear symposium on child abuse will be held in Cape Town on the 11th and 12th of August at which there will be a number of talks being given by specialists in the field of child abuse, oh yes and I will also be talking on the information learned during my research on the subject of child rape. So contact TygerBear on 021 – 931 6702 / 6717 email: tygerbear@telkomsa.net (www.tygerbear.org.za) and book your ticket or to offer your assistance with organising teas etc.

So with that I will bid you all farewell for now, so keep well, stay safe and of course keep all children safe, ciao for now.

Caring regards from

I have decided to dedicated this blog to the storey I was told and the details of which were forwarded to me in a devastating email I received from a gentleman in Upington, who has asked me to publish the details of his story in order to ensure that ‘justice’ is achieved for the savage who has created chaos in his life. So here then is Hynie Dick’s storey. I must warn those with sensitive stomachs that the contents of this storey are graphic and so be warned!

My story of horror: Hyney Dick

Greetings Steve

I hereby wish to tell you my life-experience with Jakobus Dick, also known as uncle “Baai”. This conversation will  also include my past with this sadistic paedophile as well as my nieces and aunts life with him and the present situation.

THE PAST: MY LIFE IN NABABEEP

My name is Hyney Paul Dick and I was born and raised in a small town in Namaqualand called named Nababeep. We were seven brothers and two sisters. As my common sense developed, I was informed that uncle Baai is my father’s brother and he was staying with my family long before my time. To me, my brothers and our friends he became the uncle every boy could only dream about. To us, he was like a 365 days “Santa Clause” entertaining us, giving us money and I remember that as boys, on every Sunday, he took us for barbecue in the veldt with his car. In fact he never missed a church service. Wearing suits that other men also could only dream of. For me as a boy, I couldn’t wait for the next Sunday, because we knew that we were going to drive in his car (BMW) for a barbecue, it was fun.

As we grew older, he started taking us to Upington, to visit our grandfather during holidays. In Upington he took us to the river and we swam all day long. There were always other boys with us. He even took us to his workplace and showed us everything there. As I grew older, I realised that this man had extreme power in our town. He was buying year in and year out brand new BMW’s. He was administrating the local club, cinema, swimming-pool, etc. in our town. If anybody wanted something, they first had to ask him for permission. I remember how he took us to the swimming-pool, but he always expected from us (myself, brothers and our friends) to swim naked or with only our underwear. For us as boys it was fun, because he was entertaining us for free. As technology developed (television, video machines, video cazettes, etc.) he showed us movies on the video machines, but at night he never allowed us to watch movies with him. Only our friends were allowed. Obviously we became jealous. When we got the chance, we went through his video cassettes and it was there that we found out that he was in possession of pornographic material. As boys when he was at work or in church, we even sometimes watched these pornographic movies. We were interested in this, because to us it was something out of this world, we never though that people made this kind of movies. I remember that my youngest brother was his favourite of all of us as brothers. He has passed away since, I cannot remember whether it was 1986, 1987 or 1988, but all that I remember was that I was at Secondary School.

But a horrific story unfolds regarding this uncle “Baai.” I still remember the name of the boy, his name was Gerrit and he was one of our many friends. Gerrit informed his parents what this man was doing with him and other boys. We heard that he sucked the boys and then put there sperm in a cup and then mixed it with cool drink and then drank it. We also heard that he asked the boys to masturbate and bring their sperm for him. We heard about the pornographic movies that the boys were watching with him, all of that for money and gifts which he gave to the boys.

I remember how my father, who has since passed away, wanted to kill him with a pickaxe because he was devastated as a father of children. The police came and took him away. The community of Nababeep were shocked about these events and charges regarding this against a once very powerful man. Meanwhile three of my brothers left school. We, and not him alone became the talk of the town. I by then unconsciously became like a protector to children. Today, as a grown up I realise why I was always protected and devoted over other children, especially poor children.

I finished matric and studied a career as a teacher at the Upington College. My parents, including some of my brothers and one sister left Nababeep and bought a house in Upington. Uncle “Baai” was out of our lives. I always wondered what happened to him after the bomb exploded in Nababeep. As a young man I started realising that he must have sub-consciously shattered us as a family. We do not operate like other families. We do not even call each other, wish each other or even support one another; we are just brothers and sisters. The most important, namely LOVE is missing.

In 2005 I met Suzetta at a local church in Upington. We fall in love, got married and started renting a house in Upington. She is also a teacher and both of us had the same passion for children. On the 15 January 2009 our baby girl was born and I was in seventh heaven. I have already had “adopted” Sindoline since 1997. We were living happily together as a family.

MY NIECE, WHO WAS BORN IN UPINGTON: HER AND HER ONLY DAUGTHERS’ NIGHTMARE WITH HIM:

In 2006, out of the blue this man returned to Upington. He was not the same man I used to know. He was reflecting the opposite as the man I used to know. The first time in 2006, when we met again, he was a dirty, old man wearing ragged, dirty clothes. There was no BMW. He walked and later on started riding a bicycle. He always came to our place asking for food, money and newspapers. By then I had not yet informed my wife about his past. Actually, my wife who is a passionate Christian felt sorry for him and even I did, so we always helped him with what ever he needed. He started telling us stories about how cruel my niece is treating him since his return to Upington, stories about abuse and abandoning. His last story to us regarding my niece was that she apparently sued him and that it meant that he had to sell the family house in order to pay her. He told us that he legally put the house in my eldest brothers name to avoid losing his only property that could be used to settle the suing amount which my niece wanted. The house was always on his name. My niece meanwhile has left with her daughter because of this house of horrors. I even gave him a vicious dog which I got from a colleague at my school because I felt at that stage he was living alone and the dog could protect him. My colleague never told me the history of the dog. It was a monstrous dog. If I had known before I would have never given him the dog and neither would I have taken the dog from my colleague… because this dog was also used in this horrific storey.

We heard stories that the dog had savagely lacerated people and even my niece and her daughter. He and the dog were starting to terrorise the community. I was devoted to my family and I never followed up these stories of him. To be honest, we believed him. Today I feel disgusted that he had twice, actually three times fooled me by means of his lies. In August 2010, I contacted my brother and asked him if we could stay with uncle “Baai”, because we knew that he was staying alone. By then we were also afraid of the dog. My wife and I had problems with the landlord from whom we rented. They expected us to take care of their elderly mother in their house and we came to the conclusion that we as teachers with a new baby, will not be able to adapt to their request due to the fact that their mother was some kind of serious depression patient and we had our own responsibilities. The situation has become intolerable with our landlords. So we moved to the house of horrors, dog or no dog. He was excited that we came, telling us that he is an old man. He sometimes gets sick and so now there were people who could take care of him. The house at that staged was in a worse condition than a dumping site. We started to clean and made small renovations. On our second day there, the neighbours warned us about the boys that are always coming to visit uncle “Baai”, immediately I became suspicious. The third day, that monstrous dog attempt to bite my baby. That very minute I arrange that the dog must be put down, he was furious with me.

That same year we started meeting with my niece who is working at Checkers in Upington. She knew that we were staying with uncle “Baai” and that she could guarantee that we would not last longer than a month with uncle “Baai”. We wanted to know why and than she started telling us the horror of horrors that she actually made through with him. His sadistic, unthinkable methods of intimidation have destroyed her life. Boys, which were suppose to be in school, are on a daily basis there inside his room. Police are coming to the house continuously and taking the boys back to school. Crime started to be the order of the day. Her plates that he brakes, interfering with her daughter, the blood on the table, the disgusting dirty, bloody blankets which he threw in the bath, making the bath black with dirt. Arranging with his victims to break into the room that she and her daughter occupied and stealing her and her daughter’s things. By then, she also informed me how my aunt and her family, who lives in Kraaifontein (Cape Town), was horribley destroyed by this man. From my niece’s story, I realised that there is no way that you can teach an old dog new tricks. Because when he left Nababeep and what ever happened to him, he went to live with his sister. And there, he continued with the boys of Cape Town. My niece told me that my aunt even had to sell her house in order to get rid of him and the wrongs that he had done to the boys. I was shocked. The last straw was when he put his dog (the dog which I gave him because I was worried about his safety) onto her daughter when she came from school and the dog bit her  flesh from her body and when people called him he laughed about the incident. That was his final attempt to destroy my niece and her daughter. Strangers took the girl to hospital. She will never be able to wear shorts, mini skirts or even swimming close due to what uncle “Baai”did. Pieces of her flesh were still lying where the dog attacked her. He also set the dog on my niece and the dog almost tore her one breast off. Some of his victims were also severely bitten by his dog. What a fool I was to think that he was an old man who needed protection.

THE PRESENT SITUATION: 2010-2011 AND THE EXPOSION OF HIM:

The above mentioned was informed to me, when my family and I already were living with him. (August 2010). Even some of the inhabitants of the community also informed us all about what my niece already told us. I asked them why they have not reported these horrors to someone, regarding this man. The answers they gave me rather made me more depressed.

When we started living with him, we noticed his abnormal lifestyle. First, he watched television with us, but he would always sit with his face almost against the television set. I asked him why does he watch TV like that and he told us it is because he has very bad sight. I told my wife that I do not believe him. Why? Because the next abnormal thing that he did was “walking” in the darkest of dark nights with his dogs, every night. We started to notice that he “walks” with the dogs almost the same time every night and then he stayed away for hours. The same pattern happened during the day. Every morning, almost the same time every morning (except on Sundays), he left the house to go to town, today, I know why. He was busy with “fishing children.”

Very soon, I have analyzed that everything that is happening to us, happened in the same pattern, he destroyed my niece and her daughter lives. He started by intimidating us by means of his septic life style, then he started with Sindoline (my adopted daughter). He had even made remarks on her personal hygiene. One night, she came to me with tears in her eyes telling me that uncle “Baai” told her that she does not wash herself thoroughly and that he wants to bath her to make sure that she is clean. My wife and I were furious and we disciplined him regarding this matter and he started breaking our kettles and our plates, etc. Meanwhile I arrange extra safety measures with my mother in law regarding Suney (my two year old daughter). She is the person who takes care of Suney when we go to work. Both my wife and I are teachers. During all of this horror that we went through with him, I continuously warned him that as a teacher I will expose him if he ever touched another child again. I could never allow him to know that he was actually slowly, but surely intimidating my family. We were starting to fear him. We were literally living in constant fear, because everything that is happening to us happened in the very same manner that it happened with my niece and her daughter. My mother in law regularly informed us that when we were at school boys were still coming to the house and so I started to do my own investigations and I started reporting these things to the police. (October 2010) I even went to the Child Protection Unit. But nobody ever followed up my information. November 2010, one of his victims came to this house. He actually told us his own horror experience with this monster. It is sad, but when I asked him why did he came back if what happened to him startled him. He said, he needed the money because the girl he is making a living with, has a girl (10 years old), who is mentally and physically ill and she has needs. To be honest even today I blame the system for that innocent 10 year old girl, who never will function normally, especially not in a normal household in the middle of a squatters’ camp. I promised the victim that I will help him no matter what. To me, his circumstances were critical. I called the police. Two young policemen came and took his statement but again nothing happened and so I actually started to give up. Luck was always on this monsters’ side. Meanwhile he was making our lives’ hell on earth with his sadistic methods. In April 2011, a policeman came to me regarding the selling of his car. I was interested and we started to talk business. I continuously asked him if he does not know someone to whom we can go who will actually do something about these cases against this monster. He also never gave me a solution at that stage. Then also in April 2011, when I came from school, my mother in law informed me that a boy came here because uncle “Baai” asked him to do so. She told the boy that he was not here, but in town and that he should leave and rather come back later when he will be here. That boy never left, because while she was busy hanging the washing, he entered the house and stole three cell phones of us. My baby was in the house alone with that thug. I was furious. I called the police, they never came. I realized and know that this monster was organizing with these boys to steal our stuff in the same manner he did with my niece. I was desperate for help so I called the policeman who sold his car to me. I told him that the monster I was talking about was living with us, actually I informed him more specific. The next day (It was on a Friday) he picked me up at school and I took him to possible victims (according my own investigations). We went to those boys’ school and they actually, for the first time, started speaking. They informed us that they knew about other boys also. That day we went to all of the victims and one by one the horror unfolded. One specific boy told us that on the Wednesday the monster told him that we as a family are disturbing him in his ways and means of operating. The same policeman and three others came to this house of horrors and found lots of pornographic material in the room he is occupying. He was arrested that same Friday in April 2011.These boys told us that he somehow manage to overpower them and then he shows them porn and then he sucks them and then he drinks their sperm in front of them from a cup. The same dog is used to attack if they do not want to abide. One boy even told us that this monster has such a demonic impact on him that before he knows he returns to him because he was always in need for money and this man gave them money and gifts in return for there sperms. Shocking thing is that the amount of money that he gives depends on the quantity of sperms that they give. This means that the more money they want, the longer this monster abuses them in one day. I was shocked, because the whole story is the same of what happened in Nababeep in the eighties. The Sunday an investigating officer came and took my statement. The investigating officer stayed in contact with me regularly and meanwhile more and more victims were found. In fact almost every street child in Upington was victims. By than I realized that his going to town every day was to “fish” and abuse. The investigating officer informed me that he found a person from Cape Town who told him that he was staying with the monster in Cape Town. He was a victim also. According to the investigating officer, this person confessed to him that uncle “Baai” had abused hundreds if not thousands of children in Cape Town also. Sometimes he had to watch. Now I know that after all these years, he never stopped. I also started to understand why my aunt, where he was staying by then, sold her house in order to get rid of her brother. One thing I do not understand is why she had not reported him to the police. I think I will never know. Meanwhile the investigating officer informed me that this monsters’ case is getting bigger and bigger on a daily base. More and more children have been found. Then something bad happened.

One of my brothers passed away. My eldest brother asked me to organise the funeral at my own expense. My life had come to a complete standstill. Death and a monster. I decided to book myself off for the rest of this quarter at school. Things were getting too much for me. On the 26 of April 2011 the monster appeared in court. I was relaxed and did not expect that he will be released out of prison. The commander of the child protection unit also assured me that his case will just roll over and that he has to apply for formal bail application. I did not even go to court, because I had been guaranteed that he will not be released. By 14hoo that same day I received a call from my sister who told me that uncle “Baai” was released on bail of R300, 00, without any bail conditions. I was shocked and furious and I phoned the commander of the child protection unit. She was also shocked and told me that she do not know what went wrong. Like I predicted he arrived here with shopping parcels and he was furious because he knew that I had exposed him. His anger was devastating and such a way that my wife, Sindoline and my baby got panic attacks, especially my baby. From a physical point of view I really do not fear him. He is an old man and I surely will be able to defend myself and my family, but am scared of his methods of sadism. I know that he will do anything to hurt us or even to kill us. I could not take any risks. I asked my wife to leave with the children and I will leave later because I even fear that he will destroy our belongings. That night I told him that what he is doing is wrong and that I will never stop until justice is done. I even told him that indirect am I also busy to actually help him because he cannot continue living this lie he is living. He is destroying innocent lives, including the lives of his own family. He did not listen to any reason. That night the police came and they actually referred to him as a “senior citizen.”I will never ever forget those two words and how those two words brought my life to an end. I then knew that his intelligence was superior and that he could use that as a mechanism to free him for ever.

I was still busy to organize my brothers’ funeral. On the 28th of 2011, I went to court to ask what happened. They could not give me a satisfactory answer. They told me to draw up a petition list. I did that all day long and all night long. I took the list back to the court. Meanwhile this monster is making our lives hell and as if nothing has happened, he just continued with his life in the very same manner as before. He is still going to town everyday.  I have realized that he really has no hart or feelings. On the 4th of May 2011 a boy came here again and informed my mother in law that he came on uncle “Baais’” request. After the boy told me everything, I took him to the commander of the child protection unit. His statement was also horrific and his statement revealed that he abuse the children even in public, I was shocked. That same day, I went to the funeral place and there the manager, who is also involved in the SPCA, told me that uncle Dick was also there to look at my brothers’ body and that she knew him. She started to inform me that she knew him due to the fact that they as the SPCA had a complaint once regarding his dogs. They followed up the complaint. Took away dogs and dogs or a dog that was pregnant. The puppies according to her were severely deformed. I believed her because I recall that since we moved there people will always scold him that he is “fucking” his dogs. Now I know that it was not only children whom he abused, but animals (dogs) also. At that stage I froze and again I realized that this man is actually very sick and dangerous. More than I originally thought. I also remembered that when we moved here, there were lots of dogs, but they were always bleeding from there noses and they had warts all around there mouths. Everything started to make sense. I cannot remember the date, but he was re-arrested after the funeral on the 7th 0f May 2011. On the 17th of May 2011, I went to court after the investigating officer told me to do so. When I arrived at court he had just been released. He was a free man again, a man who is, according to me and the investigating officer, one of South Africa’s most dangerous men. I could not believe my eyes. On 18th May 2011, he dumped all his bloody, dirty and septic blankets in the bath which we as a family use. Now I understood why my niece told me that she and her daughter never used the bathroom with him. I took pictures of the mess and called the police. The police came, I explained to them again. He resisted arrest and was taken away. Four or five hours later, he just came walking here again, despite the fact that I asked Colonel Fielies to please keep the man in custody. The situation has become very dangerous for us as a family. That day, he started to increase his sadistic attempts on us, messing with bloody entrails on the kitchen table and licking the kitchen table with his tongue. We have always feared for germs or bugs etc especially because of my baby. On 20th of May 2011, I noticed bees everywhere. The bathroom is on the stoop and the swarm of bees were specifically there. At first I thought that a swarm had maybe moved to the house, but I was wrong. I sprayed doom and then the bees minimised. I then saw a Marshmallow (sweets) on his fridge. I noticed that the bees were actually swarming towards the bag. I confronted him and warned him that his intimidation must stop but he obviously denied everything. When I removed the bag, the bees’ disappeared. Someone in the community informed me after I told him that it was farmers do to attract bees for pollination. They use sweet stuff in their fields. Now he is using nature to make our life hell. On Saturday 21 May 2011, I saw how my two dogs were bringing in dead birds and doves into the house, tearing the birds apart and when I went outside, dead birds and doves were lying everywhere. Even on the neighbours’ roof also. I just knew that he was behind this. These things never happened before. I even informed the police about that. I went to court and got an interdict against him. Meanwhile I had gone to “Die Gemsbok” and “Die Son” for help. These are small newspapers. It was in “Die Gemsbok” where I saw your name and your work. I was desperate and so I called you, I cannot remember precisely when, but I called you. I just saw in my diary that I contacted you on the 26th of May 2011. From the 4th of May 2011, I have decided to record my daily horrors in a diary. There must be someone that can help. On Friday, 27th of May 2011, afternoon, I woke up from the smell of smoke in the house. Again I confronted him. Again I called the police and I had to beg them to just remove this man from the premises. The next day, he just came back. On Sunday, the 26th of May 2011, my wife informed me that my sister told her on Mxit that she and my youngest brother also had been molested by him. My youngest brother died since. I felt like killing him once and for all, because now I realized that in Nababeep he must have destroyed us as brothers and sisters. I suddenly realize why we as a family do not even really care about one another. There is not really love. We are just brothers and sisters. Even today, I have not told my mother yet about what my sister informed my wife about and she accordingly informed me. My sister even told my wife that someone noticed this monster in the early hours (03h00hrs) on Sunday morning in Progress, near my mothers house. I remember how I once scolded him by saying that he is not just a paedophile, but also a vampire. On the same Sunday, someone informed me that he was sitting in church as if he is the holiest of holy people. I could not believe that people are still falling for his betrayal towards mankind. That same day the investigating officer told me that he had a warrant for his arrest.

My life has totally been shattered. I even wanted to file a divorce and I even asked my wife to take the children and stay with her mother but she refused. She is still supporting me, but I can see that even she is starting to fall apart. We have been emotionally crushed. We are financially crushed and Sindoline and Suney are not the same anymore. We have even asked churches to pray for us. We cannot move because we are financially ruined. I cannot even buy Nappies for Suney or even food for us. I cannot even afford an e-mail to you, but I will try. To me, everybody just listens, and nobody helps. Above all the car that I bought broke. I must go and try for a loan in order for us to survive. Personally, I realized that the devil really does not admire me and my wife. Obstacles are coming from nowhere. But we will not allow Satan to beat us with this round. I believe that very soon we as a family will be back on our feet again. These chains just have to be broken.

I admire the investigating officer for his devotion towards this case. I once asked him “How do you feel, when listening to all of these horrors?”He answered “I try my best to cope.”I am doing this to save any more children from harm. I do this to hopefully repay my family for what this man has done to almost every member of his own family. Within nine months he destroyed my life. I am doing this for the people of the Northern Cape, Upington and in-fact the whole country. This man is evil, and I believe that he is contributing to the creation of a new generation of paedophiles in South Africa.

Above all I am doing all this to protect my own daughters from harm. To be honest especially my baby, named Suney Dick. Why?, because she is different. I was there when she was born. The doctors in the theatre told me that she is different than millions of other babies. At first I thought that something was seriously wrong, just to find out that my wife and I had been blessed with an angel. According to the doctor she had been born with certain emotions they observed the very first minute of her life outside her mothers womb. I could not believe it. When she was three months old, she started to speak sentences. When she was twelve months old, she told me and I quote: “Daddy, I am going to be a scientist one day. I am going to America and work at NASA and I am going to build spaceships.” We believe she is an indigo child. She even calls this monster an old stupid paedophile. I just want Suney to become a scientist. Some learners in grade 12 sometimes do not even know what or who they want to be, she knows. I just MUST apply to her dreams. People do not understand that I am desperate for justice. I cannot allow this monster to destroy her or my family. I am broken, but I WILL FIGHT UNTIL THE END. All these obstacles will pass by.

He has been arrested again on Monday, 30 May 2011. I think he is currently in Upington prison. The investigating officer informed me that he will appear in court on 02 June 2011. I went to court just to found out from the head prosecutor that he is due to appear in court on the 08th of June 2011 and not on the 2nd of June. That day, the car broke. The devil really dislikes me. Personally, I think he will walk out of court again. I just don’t know anymore. I want to leave this house, but I am unfortunately stranded without the proper finances. I don’t think I will survive one more of his unthinkable sadistic methods. Everywhere I go, I just hear about his rights, noboby cares about my and my family’s rights. I am sick and tired of this. I do not even know if I am aloud to inform you, because the monster has rights. I don’t care anymore. I also have rights. Actually I fear that he his going to poison us. He did poison the birds and the doves.

I hope I have remembered everything I needed to tell you. Steve, I believe you do understand and I also believe that you will listen, and will do something to help us. I am even willing to tell our story to the international community as well. I just want to save every child that I can save from this monster. If you need anything from me, just contact me. I will help where ever I have to help. To be honest even airtime has become a luxury to me.

Steve, thank you in advance and I hope to hear from you very soon. Blessings to you and may God always be with you.

Yours sincerely

Hyney Dick

Welcome to blog 33 of the ‘Buddy and Me’ project. This past week has found me, as well as Buddy, undertaking some extensive travelling; I did a bit more than Buddy, due to the Round Tablers of Vryburg ‘hi-jacking’ me. This week has also found me celebrating my birthday in a magical place courtesy of Round Tabler Hennie Stols, who is not only a Tabler in the Vryburg Round Table but is also Area Chairman of the Round Table Northern Cape Area. This week also found me grieving from the news that my mother, who would have turned 84 on the 6th of June passed away.

So let me start at the beginning, but first, once again my apologies to Julia for the number of photos in this blog, but unfortunately due to it being a lengthy period of time I am covering a lot has happened and I have met so many people and done so much I would not be doing them justice for their incredible support and assistance to the ‘Buddy and Me’ project if I did not publish the photos, so here goes.

So when last I wrote, (blog 32) I was leaving Kathu and heading for Kuruman. My visit to Kuruman was a particularly good one, in that the Beares store Manager, Nico Rheeder had made arrangements for me to do talks at two schools in the area. The first was at a pre-primary school (Wielie Walie) where I got to meet a horde of kids who instantly fell in love with Buddy,

and after my talk,

obviously if I did not let them clamber all over Buddy and include him in the proceedings, he would have given me a hard time on the road for a long tome to come.

Next it was a visit to the Kuruman Primary School, where on our arrival at the front gate ‘Buddy and Me’ had to ‘drive the gauntlet’,

which involved driving into the premises between two long lines of pupils all shouting greetings, waving and cheering at the tops of their voices.

All the kids were ushered into the main hall and following a presentation on the various forms of child abuse, as well as information on what a child should do should it find itself being a victim of the despicable crime of child abuse by Social Worker Louise Prinsloo of the NGO – ACVV Kuruman, I was given the privilege of addressing the packed hall and had their undivided attention for three quarters of an hour.

I also got to meet the Vice Principal of the school, Mrs. Irene Turner

and the Head Boy Gerhard (On my right) and Deputy Head Boy, Hennie

Following my amazing time at the school, ‘Buddy and Me’ bid the pupils and staff farewell, and after once again driving yet another gauntlet out of the school premises we headed for the Beares Kuruman store. Here I had a lengthy chat with Social Workers Louise Prinsloo and Jeneveve (and yes that is spelt right) Anthony about what is happening in the area with regard to the rape and sexual abuse of children, and yes it is happening at a rate of knots in the area.

After presenting them with the findings of the ‘Buddy and Me’ project and presenting them with what ‘I believe’ is the ‘ground roots’ to stop the rape of children (See the link “Proposal for a Solution…on the front page of this website) they both agreed fully that should the government and NPA (National Prosecuting Authority) who is currently heading up the formation and establishment of the Thuthuzela Care Centre’s around South Africa and who are, in the process, according to my humble opinion, currently due to the manner in which they are being established, is wasting an enormous amount of the South African tax payers money, not to mention millions of Rands (US Dollars) being given to them by various international organisations.

Following my chat with Louise and Jeneveve I spent some quality time with the friendly staff of Beares Kuruman.

From the Beares store I headed for the Thuthuzela Care Centre which is based at the provincial hospital. Here I met two ladies who because of the sensitive nature of the information I was provided I promised not to disclose their names. After being told how the centre operates, as in the process a mother of a child rape victim has to follow, which by the way is pretty much the same as that adopted in all other areas where Thuthuzela care Centres have been ‘established’ I can understand and appreciate, once again, why mothers refuse to subject their kids to this process, and I must admit that faced with the predicament I would not subject my child to this horrible process if my child was a victim of the despicable crime of child rape. I personally would rather ensure that she or he receives the proper medical and counselling support, and then subject myself to the legal / justice process.

One bit of information I received in the area was particularly mind boggling for me, and that was that it has come to their attention that there are certain police officials in the Kuruman area who when being approached by mothers with children who have been raped, describe the shocking and traumatic process she and her child will be subjected to if she reports it, including graphic details of the examination, problems and possible consequences they could face should the perpetrator be arrested and released on bail, the lengthy period of time it will take for the case to go to trial etc etc etc. This is obviously not helping to encourage mothers to report the rape and sexual abuse of their children; hence the problem is escalating at a mean rate.

After discussing the current manner in which the Thuthuzela Care Centres are being established and presenting them with my proposal on how ‘I believe’ they should be established, I was asked “So Steve why are you not the boss of the Thuthuzela Care Centres”. Well ladies all I wish is that the ‘powers that be’ in the Thuthuzela Care Centres, as in Senior Director – Advocate Majokweni, Deputy Director – Bronwyn Pithey or Senior Advocate (SOCA-NPA) – Lizelle Africa would respond to one of my many emails and phone call messages to contact me and allow me the opportunity to discuss my issues with the establishment of the Thuthuzela Care Centres with them, but to date alas I have not been afforded the privilege of receiving any form of communication from any of them or from their offices, I wait in anticipation.

My accommodation in Kuruman was kindly provided courtesy of Ansa and Tienie Linde who own the lovely Shalom Guesthouse and B+B. At the time of meeting Ansa, she was forced to cut our chat short due to her not feeling well and was forced to retire to bed. Two days later I received a call from Nico Rheeder, the manager of the Beares store in Kuruman with the devastating news that Ansa was in the process of passing away and that her family and close friends had been summonsed to her bedside to say their final farewells to this lovely lady. Evidently she had suffered, I believe?, some type of stroke which had affected her breathing which in turn had drastically reduced the flow of oxygen to her brain. The doctor confirmed that due to the severe damage this had caused there was no point in transferring her to hospital and so the good byes were done in the comfort of her lovely home and bed. So Tienie you have my heartfelt sympathy and condolences and I am sure you will treasure the many lovely memories you have of Ansa, your incredibly lovely, kind and generous wife for many years to come, stay strong, my thoughts are with you.

The Shalom Guesthouse contact details, should you ever find yourself in need of accommodation in Kuruman are: 053–7121781 or 072 195 7848.

My next port of call was Vryburg, and in this town resides a group of individuals, in the form of the Round Tablers, who must be one of the craziest, most incredible bunch of individuals I have ever had the pleasure of being acquainted with. Immediately on informing the Table Chairman, Ettienne Starke of my intended visit to Vryburg, I was contacted by a couple of the Table members and arrangements were made for me to stay at the Molopo Travel Inn, and for me to attend the local ‘Biltong Fees’ that night.

Before getting settled into my room, I first headed for the police station where I was given a very ‘cagey’ reception and was then sent off to the only support structure the town of Vryburg has for victims of child rape as well as victims of domestic violence, namely the Naledi ‘One – Stop’ Centre which is situated in the Huhudi Township a short way outside of Vryburg. Here I met a Social Worker by the name of Phammy Matlabe who confirmed that the services or support the centre provides is identical to that provided by the Thuthuzela Care Centres, and is also of a very poor quality and the fact that it, as in the case of the Thuthuzela Care Centres, is referred to as a ‘One-Stop’ centre is an absolute joke!

In almost all instances during my extensive travels and talks at ‘victim support centres’ to be found scattered around South Africa, I have discovered that the social workers at these centres, the majority being volunteers, and these being individuals who provide counselling to rape victims and victims of domestic violence who have suffered severe trauma, have had no training whatsoever. After hearing details of my proposal on what needs to be done to eradicate child rape from our society, Phammy fully agreed that if the centres were established like I propose it would be the roots of eradicating the scourge from our society. We had a lengthy discussion on the problem surrounding young girls in the 13 -15 year age group whose boyfriends are much older, as in their 20’s and the parents allow them to participate in sex and because the boyfriend pay the family money, and even when the child falls pregnant the parents do nothing about it, as in reporting the rape of the child, because of the ‘financial factor’. This in my constitutes ‘Child trafficking’ and yet our government, as in its justice system, condones it and does nothing to stop it in-spite of all its propaganda campaigns claiming to want to ‘Stamp out Child Trafficking”.

The big problem is that our government is participating in this crime and should be charged along with the parents for contravening section 54 of ‘Act 32 of the Sexual Offences Act’ in that they are not prosecuting the parents for failing to report the rape of the child. Phammy also agreed that the government has got to do something fast to stop enticing young girls and young women to have children purely for the purpose of receiving the child grants, which in many cases the child receives no benefit from. We had a very long discussion and Phammy gave me some really good opinions and comments, so many thanks Phammy for your time.

This is the first group of Tablers who arrived at the Molopo Travel Inn to greet me. I was soon whisked off to the local country club where I met a few more Tablers,

for a ‘serious’ meeting, and then off to the ‘Biltong Fees (festival)’

where yep I did a lot more talking. Now for those who have never attended a ‘Biltong Fees’, this involves a four course meal all consisting of yep BILTONG! The soup is made from biltong, the starter is made from biltong, the main course is biltong and yes you guesed, the desert is small cookies things made from BILTONG! I have never been presented with or even heard of so many varieties of biltong! A truly amazing experience.

From the biltong fees, I was taken to meet a number of Vryburg’s celebrities and community members at a local pub where I even got to meet with this lovely lady

So everyone meet Lize-Marie Twigge ‘Miss Stellalander for 2011’. During the course of the evening, I was told by Hennie Stols, the Round Table Area Chairman for the Northern Cape Area, that functions were being held by the Round Tables in both Kakamas as well as Augrabies the next day (Saturday) and that my presence at these functions had been requested by the respective Round Tables.

The fact that attending these functions would involve a round trip of almost 1300 kilometres and which would take almost 13 hours to complete, did not deter me, what me pass up an opportunity to talk, I would travel to the ends of the earth to talk on the subject of child rape and the information I have obtained on this ‘Buddy and Me’ project. So after being dropped off at my Molopo Travel Inn accommodation at a quarter to three on Saturday morning, yep you read that right, I was picked up 45 minutes later by the Tablers of Vryburg, in their combi, and we started the long trek South to, first Kakamas and then Augrabies, roughly 620 something kilometres away! Fortunately Tablers are very insistent on a driver being allocated for when they attend any functions where the consumption of alcohol is partaken in, so guy’s hats off to you for your insistence on this rule.

The function at kakamas involved a Bowls competition in which everyone had to participate; mmmm I won’t go into detail with that,

Here Trixie, Hennie’s wife, was ‘warming up’ with Tabler Paul Dippenaar, Vice Chairman of Augrabies Round Table and our host that evening on his incredibly beautiful wine farm on the banks of the Orange River in Augrabies. Following a very festive afternoon in Augrabies, we headed out for the Round Table club house in Augrabies where I once again got the opportunity to do what I love doing, talk,

So meet the Tablers of Augrabies where I was once again presented with a Round Table banner and lapel pin to add to my ever growing collection of Round Table pins and banners.

After a magic time with the Round Tablers of Augrabies at their club house we retired to Pauls Dippenaars magnificent home, which as I said is situated on the banks of the mighty Orange River a short way down from the Augrabies Fall, these falls

Paul and his lovely wife Jandri (I hope I spelt it right) as in the case with all Round Tablers, are amazing hosts and we were provided with a genuine ‘Noord Kaap’ braai and all the ‘stuff’ that goes with it, and so all and sundry,

had a marvellous time in paradise. So many thanks Paul and Jandri for your incredible friendship and hospitality, it was sincerely appreciated.

During the long drive back to Vryburg on Sunday, Hennie asked me where I was intending to spend the week of my birthday, (the up-coming week) which I had originally scheduled to spend in Cape Town but do to ‘unforeseen’ changes in my life, I decided to cancel. When I said that I was intending to camp at one of the nearby dams, these being Bloemhof and the Warrenton Dams, he immediately offered me the use of his ‘holiday home’ which is situated on the banks of the Vaal River a short way outside of Christiana. Hence I spent the week of my birthday at this incredibly beautiful place

And of course I partook in my favourite sport, and that being?

For my birthday (Tuesday the 24th May), I popped into a local establishment called ‘Amperklaar” (for those who don’t understand Afrikaans this means ‘nearly finished’) the reason for this is because the owner of the establishment Les, started building it 8 years ago and “is nearly finished?” but it is never the less a great place. A local chap, who unfortunately died about 18 months ago painted this amazing painting on the one wall, and took 7 hours to complete it.

And this is the rest of the pub

and meet the owner, Les standing on the right of the picture.

My intention and schedule was to attend the official opening of the newly revamped Hartswater Beares store on Friday the 27th May, but unfortunately at 4:45am on that fateful morning I received a call from my sister, Nan in Pinetown informing me that my mom, Val Heath had just passed away. Obviously I had to cancel the rest of the schedule for the project and after a gruelling 14 hour, 823 kilometre drive in Buddy from Christiana through what must be some of the coldest weather I have driven on the project to date, arrived in Pinetown at 11pm on Friday night. I will be providing a new schedule as soon as my moms affairs have been finalised and the schedule will be published as a blog.

The funeral/memorial service arrangements for my mom have been made for 2:30pm on Friday the 3rd of June to be held at the ‘Christ Church’ in Meller Road Pinetown, 3 days before what would have been her 84th birthday, so mom, you were an amazing mother and woman, and although I know you are in a better place, and that you wanted to be there for sometime now, but you will still be sadly missed, I love you, and will treasure the many incredible memories you left us with, rest in peace now lovely lady.

Before I sign off I would just like to mention something that has been told to the family by the management of the ‘home’ my mother spent the last few years in, namely the ‘Pinetown Nursing Home’ and although they provided her with a tremendous service during her stay there, we find it amazing that a refund of the deposit which was paid and which is a substantial amount, will not be refunded “Due to the fact that she did not provide the home with 30 days notice”. I am sure I don’t need to go into details of why we, the family, are not happy with this decision and explanation, totally ridiculous!

With that I am going to bid everyone farewell for now, keep well, stay safe and above all keep the children safe.

Caring regards from

See Blog 29 for detailed itinerary of ‘Buddy and Me’ project 3 (8th May – 23rd June 2011) So welcome to another blog / diary of ‘Buddy and Me – project3). Before I continue I must give my sincere apologies to Julia, the lovely lady / friend in Germiston who so kindly assists this computer idiot by converting my email form blogs and posting them onto my website.

I say apologies because I thought I would cut down on the number of blogs I did on project 2 and so save her some work and not take up so much of her personal time, but alas I have discovered that by doing this it makes the blogs longer with more photos to down load, so Julia you have my sincere apologies and grateful thanks for the great job you are doing, it’s truly appreciated.

So now down to business of what’s been happening in the lives of ‘Buddy and Me’. Firstly I had a great time with some amazing people, friends as well as local community members of the small towns of Doorn Baai, Strandfontein and Vredendal. Apart from learning about what is happening with regard to the rape and sexual abuse of children in these areas I also got to spend some really quality time with them, and to get to see some of the amazing countryside and undertake some extensive sight seeing along this amazing coast line.

Just a small part of what I’m talking about, I have many incredible pictures, so anyone who wants to see more can contact me on my email steve@buddyandme.co.za and I will gladly email them to you.

‘Buddy- Ziggy (If you look carefully you will see her in my arms, a cross Jack Russell / Chichawa – if that’s how one spells it?) – and Me’ inside an amazing cave I found while on my excursion along the coast line. The local community depend on two sources of income, one from the marine diamond trade; boats that collect diamonds from the oceans surface by means of divers with large vacume cleaner type equipment, and fishing, my preference of course!

The fisherman had just got back from a days fishing with their catch of Snoek which has been in abundance for the last few weeks when I arrived at the slipway and of course I could not resist buying one, hell at R20-00 for a 3 Kg Snoek I ask you who could turn that offer down?

I was disappointed on Saturday because the Sharks had a bye for the weekend but Lisa, (Leon’s wife, they were moss in the last photo at the braai in my last blog – 31), brightened up my day by taking me on a tour of the town which included a stop-off at the local rugby grounds where I watched a game of rugby with a few of the local community members.

And of course all the kids decided that a ride in Buddy was much more exiting than watching a game of rugby!

My visit to the area was ended off with, yep you guessed, a braai and party of note! and Leon did a great job with this and not only was he braaing, but at the same time he smoked my Snoek for me, for pad kos.

So with the recreational part of my visit finished it’s now down to the working part and main purpose of my visit to the area. After all this time of being involved in the ‘Buddy and Me’ project – 6 years and 183 000 kilometres under the belt and having visited almost every town and city in South Africa as well as 14 other countries in Africa, I still find it incredible that whenever I arrive in an area and speak to the ‘authorities’ as in the people, who ‘should’ know what’s going on in the area with regard to child rape, I am told “Child rape here, nooo it doesn’t happen here, we have maybe one or two cases a year”.

Well firstly one or two cases a year in my book is one or two cases too many, secondly this information I always discover after talking to the women and mothers and other community members in the area, is absolute nonsense. The information obtained from this source always paints an entirely different picture and I am told that “it is occurring on a large scale”, but as usual for the reasons identified in my ‘Proposal for a Solution to Stopping the rape of Children’ link on this website, it is not being reported. The three main reasons being:

1) The system or route the mother and child is subjected to in terms of the reporting at the police station, transporting of the child to a hospital in a police vehicle, the humiliation and degradation the child is subjected to at the hospital, the fact that the rapist is released on bail to torment and intimidate the child and mother / parents etc.

2) In the majority of instances (believed to be around 90%) the father, as in the biological father or step-father, uncle is the perpetrator, therefore should he be arrested and form one of the countries 4 – 6% statistics of convicted child rapists and be imprisoned, the financial factor of having the ‘bread winner’ removed from the family environment is too devastating for the mother to live with.

3) Because of the facts mentioned in 2 above, the family, because of the embarrassment of the child being raped, sexually abused, by the father, step-father uncle etc, put immense pressure on the mother not to report it, in-spite of section 54 of the Sexual Offences Act 32/2007 forbidding this and making it a crime. (For details and an example on what I believe should be done to stop this practice, see blog 24) The other major problem of course is the fact that there is absolutely no support structure whatsoever in this entire area for victims of child rape, or for that matter, victims of domestic violence which because of the massive drug (Tik) and alcohol abuse problem, is rife! Sunday morning found ‘Buddy and Me’ heading out of Doorn Baai in very misty/overcast and freezing cold weather, but after passing through Vredendal and Vanrhynsdorp and cresting the Vanrhyns Pass where visibility was a mere one metre, the misty/cloudy conditions suddenly evaporated and the sky was suddenly blue with not a cloud in sight, absolutely amazing.

After cresting the Pass I looked back and could see the perfectly straight line of the misty/cloudy conditions behind me. The 611 kilometre drive to Upington took ‘Buddy and Me’ a devastating 9 hours and 53 minutes to complete and was one of the loneliest drives I have ever undertaken, much time to think, I mean check this out,

and this was the scenery for most of the trip. I think I saw a total of 10 vehicles during the entire 10 hours and the only human beings I saw were 5 when I stopped in Kenhardt to fill up with petrol and in-fact at one stage with the road disappearing far into the distance I thought I caught a glimpse of next week. Passing through Calvinia (Oh yes I saw a couple of human beings there too, but only a couple because after all it was Sunday) I saw this amazing sight Pic 1349 the worlds biggest post box! Fortunately Protea Hotels once again came to my rescue, because after the almost 10 hour trip all I wanted was a room to sleep in, but first a long, soaking bath because after all it was 7pm when I checked in, and the Protea Upington Hotel’s General Manager Peet Janse van Rensburg kindly and generously provided both for me.

So Peet you and your friendly staff have my eternal gratitude and thanks for you friendship and hospitality. How’s this for a view of the Orange River, taken from my room

My visit to the Beares store in Upington was as usual a really festive occasion where the store Manager, Caleen Willemse and her friendly staff made my visit to their store a really great one.

Caleen is on my left. I spent quite a lot of time with members of the police FCS unit, who provided me with an incredible amount of information and opinions on the current systems and its failings and so I don’t think I should mention their names, I’m sure you can appreciate why.

One of the biggest gripes I have heard from members of the police force, and this is not only in the Upington area but right across South Africa, is that because of all the changes made ‘at the top’ as in senior officials being removed from office on a regular basis, every time a new ‘broom’ is brought in, he or she brings in his/her own ‘new’ ideas and every thing is changed.

With this continues ‘changing of the guards’ process, no system is given time to get properly put into place, hence major confusion in the ranks. Just a few examples of this are:

1) The fact that the name was changed from SAP (South African Police) to SAPS (South African Police Service). Now there are rumours that this will soon be changed to SAPF (South African Police Force) the reason being that the ‘new’ police Commissioner believes that the criminals “see the Police Service as a ‘soft’ organisation where as the ‘Police Force’ comes across as a no nonsense one”.

2) The ranks were changed from Warrant Officers, Lieutenants, Majors, and Colonels etc to Inspectors, Superintendents, and Directors etc. They are now, after a mere couple of years and enormous cost to the tax payers, been changed back to what they originally were!

3) And my favourite, the CPU – Child Protection Unit, which by the way was regarded as one of the best specialised child protection units in the world, was disbanded, re-established as the FCS unit a couple of years later and then re-disbanded and can you believe it RE-ESTABLISHED again!

I mean, come on, how can we expect our police men and woman to function properly when chaos and confusion reigns in the top ranks and it is blatantly obvious that the ‘powers that be’ cannot make a decision and stick to it. My discussion also revealed that my information regarding the statistics I have been given with regard to the national conviction rate in child rape cases currently stands at a pathetic 4 – 6%, the main contributing factor to this was confirmed as being:

1) Pathetic statements being taken by incompetent police men and women at the initial point of reporting with this being attributed to the fact that there are nowhere near enough trained police men and women in the FCS unit. (For details on my view point on this issue, read blog 2 and blog 18, re the amount of money being spent on our ‘Metro’ police force in comparison to what is being spent on the formation and establishment of the FCS units)

2) The unacceptably long time, average between 10 months to two years for DNA forensic results to be obtained, resulting in

3) The totally ridiculous time of between 2 and 3 years for a child rape case to appear in court.

I also got to meet an interesting lady by the name of Ms. Valerie Syster who is the Manager of the Bopanong Centre and is with the Department of Social development. The functions of the centre are pretty much the same as those of the Thuthuzela Care Centres which can be found scattered around South Africa and which I am sure for those who have been following my blogs, know that although I believe that they could be the roots to stopping the scourge of child rape in South Africa, are far from achieving this. (For details see the link on this website – ‘A Proposal to Stopping the Rape of Children’) I asked Valerie to read my proposal on the establishment of the Thuthuzela Care centres and look forward to her comments and opinions.

The one thing I learnt in Upington, and hearing it come from the mouths of policemen was like music to my ears, although the information was far from music to my ears, is the fact that the rape and sexual abuse of children in the area is happening at an horrific rate and the policemen who told me agreed fully that the mothers will not report it for the exact reasons I mentioned. They agreed totally that I am on the right track, so thanks guys that is very encouraging.

While driving out of Upington on my way to Kathu, I stopped off to fill up Buddy again and met yet another motorcyclists touring around South Africa, Namibia and Botswana, so meet Johan Pienaar who hails from Thabazimbi

Johan I am going to hold you to your promise of a few cold frosties when I reach Thabazimbi. The drive to Kathu was very similar to the long lonely drive from Doorn Baai to Upington, just not so long, only 213 kilometres this time and I arrived at the Beares store at 1:30 in the afternoon and spent a few hours chatting to the friendly Manager Elsabie Faber and her staff.

(That’s Elsabie in the middle in the front) I also got to spend quite a bit of time with the Commander of the Kathu SAPS – FCS unit Warrant Officer Buks Hannekom who told me that the FCS unit was formed in Kathu in February this year (2011) but unfortunately since its formation nothing much has occurred with regard to providing them with premises, even desks and the proverbial gripe of all police officers, no vehicles. The Kathu FCS unit is expected to provide essential services for victims of child rape and domestic violence generated from four stations which are scattered over a pretty large area and is expected to achieve this with a total staff consisting of Warrant Officer Hannekom and two other investigators with the use of ONE vehicle. And then we wonder why mothers won’t report the rape of their children and WHY our national conviction rate stands at a pathetic 4 – 6%. My accommodation in Kathu for the first night was kindly provided courtesy of the Melkbos B+B a really lovely place, so many thanks to Phillip and Hester Prinsloo for you kind and generous support. Before I eventually sign off, Julia is probably saying “Thank goodness for that”, I just want to tell you about a gripe I have with the tick smoking/snorting addicts of the Doorn Baai area.

On preparing to leave Doorn Baai, I did the usual walk around checking that the lights on the buggy and trailer were working and that all padlocks were on etc and to my horror I discovered that the right rear tail light of the trailer was broken. After buying a new one in Upington (R85-00) I was told by a cop that the tick addicts smash the tail lights of trailers and caravans to get the globe to use for tick, so to the juncky who broke my R85-00 tail light for two globes worth R2-50 I hope you choke on your tick and that the flees of a million camels infest your arm pits.

Your pathetic addiction not only cost me R85-00 but time running around to find a drill to redrill the holes and fit it, but thanks to Phillip of Melkbos B+B in this regard for your help. Okay, so this blog has now taken me almost four hours to write, so I am going to say chio for now, once again I am really sorry Julia for taking up so much of your personal time with this marathon blog, I’ll try to keep them shorter, but to everyone, keep well, stay safe and obviously keep all children safe. Caring regards from ‘Buddy (The Beach Buggy) And Me’ (Steve Heath)
